Hymn Boards

I am unable to resist poking my nose inside a medieval church and am endlessly fascinated by hymn boards. Hymn boards originated in the sixteenth century and originally the practice was to write the opening lines of the hymns on the boards, but in the eighteenth century it became more common to refer to the numbers under which the hymn appears in the church’s hymnal.

  1. Lovely! Like you I can’t resist peeping inside a medieval church. Its funny because whenever I see a hymn board it brings back memories of going to church as a child and frantically searching for the right hymn in the hymn book. I always seemed to be the last to find it! ;-))
